Top 8 Sights
1. Strawberry Fields
The John Lennon memorial mosaic at 72nd & Central Park West. Imagine is spelled out in black and white tiles. Buskers play Beatles songs nearly every afternoon. Small, quick, meaningful — allow 15 minutes.
2. Bethesda Terrace and Fountain
The symbolic heart of the park. The arcade has tiled ceilings, the fountain is crowned by the Angel of the Waters statue. Appeared in Home Alone 2, John Wick 3 and a hundred other films. Best at golden hour.
3. The Mall and Literary Walk
The only straight path in the park — a quarter-mile promenade of American elms lined with statues of Shakespeare, Robert Burns and Walter Scott. Street performers on weekends.
4. Bow Bridge
The elegant cast-iron bridge over the Lake, 10 minutes north of Bethesda. Best photos from the western bank or from a rowboat (rentals at Loeb Boathouse, $20/hour).
5. Belvedere Castle
A Victorian folly at the center of the park with panoramic views over the Great Lawn and the Ramble. Free entry, open 10am-5pm. Climb the stone stairs for the top view.
6. Sheep Meadow
15 acres of open lawn south of the Lake. Picnic central from May to October. Actual sheep grazed here until 1934. Closed in winter and in rain.
7. Bethesda Angel by Night
Returning at 8-9pm gives you the terrace nearly empty, with the fountain lit and the arcade echoing with buskers. Completely different atmosphere from daytime.
8. The Reservoir
1.58-mile running track around a 106-acre lake. Jackie Kennedy Onassis used to run it. The skyline reflection at sunrise is one of the best free views in NYC.
