Why Visit Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is not a city — it is a constellation of 88 cities sprawled across 500 square miles between the Pacific, the mountains and the desert. Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, downtown LA, Koreatown, East LA — each feels like its own world. LA is where the film industry, the music industry and half of American pop culture is made. Sunshine 300 days a year. Palm trees everywhere. And yes, the traffic is as bad as everyone says.

You absolutely need a car in LA, or at minimum, Uber/Lyft budget. Public transport exists but it is slow. Pick 2 or 3 neighborhoods and explore them deeply rather than trying to see everything. Venice, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, downtown, and Griffith Park are the essential five.

Best time: March-May and September-November. Summer is hot inland but perfect at the beach. Winter is mild (15-20C) with some rain — still warmer than most of the US.

Where to stay and what to expect in each area:

Safety in Los Angeles

⚠️ LA safety: Tourist areas are safe, but LA has vast inequality. Skid Row (DTLA east of Main St) should be avoided. Car break-ins are common — never leave anything visible.

Safest areas for visitors

  • Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, WeHo — Very safe day and night — heavily policed tourist areas
  • DTLA — Safe in Arts District and Grand Central; avoid Skid Row (6th to 7th St east of Main)
  • Hollywood Blvd — Safe during day; avoid side streets at night
  • Venice boardwalk — Safe by day, sketchy after dark. Move along after sunset.
🚗 Car rule: LA has more car break-ins than anywhere else in the US. NEVER leave bags, electronics, or anything visible in your car — even locked. Trunk or take it with you.
