1. National Museum of African American History & Culture
The newest and most essential. Six floors, starting with slavery in the basement and rising to contemporary culture. Book free timed-entry passes 30 days in advance. Allow 3-4 hours. Closes 5pm.
2. National Air & Space Museum
The Wright Flyer, Apollo 11 command module, Spirit of St. Louis, Mercury capsule, SpaceShipOne. Reopened after major renovation. Requires free timed-entry passes. 2-3 hours.
3. National Museum of Natural History
The Hope Diamond, T. Rex skeleton, Ocean Hall, Hall of Human Origins. Busiest museum in the Smithsonian system. Walk-in, no pass needed. 2-3 hours.
4. National Gallery of Art
Two buildings (West for pre-1900, East for modern), connected by underground walkway with Leo Villareal light tunnel. Da Vinci, Vermeer, Rothko, Calder mobile. 2 hours minimum.

Star-Spangled Banner (the actual flag), Julia Child's kitchen, the ruby slippers from Wizard of Oz, First Ladies' gowns. Great for families. Walk-in. 2 hours.

National Mall Walking Route
The Mall is a 2-mile rectangle. A natural museum order from east to west:
- 1. Start at US Capitol (Union Station metro) — 9am
- 2. Walk west, stop at National Gallery of Art East + West — 2 hours
- 3. Lunch at Pavilion Cafe (Sculpture Garden) — 1 hour
- 4. Natural History — 2 hours
- 5. American History next door — 1 hour quick or 2 hours thorough
- 6. Continue west past Washington Monument to WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial — 45 min
- 7. Metro back from Foggy Bottom or Smithsonian station
Total walking 4-5 miles. Comfortable shoes essential. The Mall has no shade — sunscreen in summer.
Food & Practicalities
- Best cafeteria: Mitsitam Cafe at the American Indian museum — regional Native cuisine, $16-22 mains
- Fastest: Pavilion Cafe (National Gallery Sculpture Garden) — sandwiches, pizza
- Best coffee nearby: Compass Coffee (multiple DC locations)
- Avoid: the Natural History basement cafeteria — overpriced and mediocre
- Free water fountains in every museum — bring a refillable bottle
- Public restrooms in every museum lobby

Security Rules
All Smithsonian museums have airport-style security: bag X-ray and metal detectors.
- No knives, firearms, pepper spray, tripods
- Small backpacks OK — large packs and suitcases turned away
- No food or uncovered drinks in galleries
- Photography without flash allowed in most galleries
- Strollers welcome in most galleries
- Coat check free at several museums (Natural History, American History)
The African American History museum has the strictest security and longest queues. Even with a timed pass, allow 20-30 minutes to enter. Small bags only.
