Why Visit San Francisco?

San Francisco is 47 square miles of vertical streets, pastel Victorians, tech wealth and counterculture history. The Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz, Chinatown (the largest outside Asia), the Mission, Haight-Ashbury — every neighborhood has a distinct identity. The weather is famously weird: summer is foggy and 15C, autumn is warm and clear. Mark Twain said "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco" — he was right.

Stay near Union Square or the Embarcadero for your first visit. Explore the Mission for burritos and murals, Haight-Ashbury for the 60s history, Chinatown for dim sum, and the Marina for the best Golden Gate views. Cable cars are touristy but unmissable.

Best time: September-November is SFs real summer — warm, clear, no fog. Avoid July-August (cold and foggy). Winter is mild and rainy.

Safety in San Francisco

⚠️ SF safety: Very safe in tourist areas but homelessness and open drug use are visible in parts of Tenderloin, Mid-Market, and parts of the Mission. Avoid these areas especially at night.

Safest areas for visitors

  • Union Square, Marina, Pac Heights — Very safe day and night
  • Embarcadero, Fishermans Wharf — Very safe, heavy tourist presence
  • Tenderloin — AVOID. The area between Union Sq and Civic Center is rough.
  • Mid-Market (6th Street) — AVOID at night. Tech offices by day, sketchy at night.
🚗 Car break-ins: SF has the highest car break-in rate in the US. NEVER leave anything visible in your car. Use garages.
