Pier 39 Sea Lions
The famous sea lions arrived in January 1990, a few months after the Loma Prieta earthquake, and crowded out the K-Dock marina. The Marina Harbormaster tried to chase them off — eventually relented and closed the dock permanently. They've stayed ever since.
Population fluctuates between roughly 150 in summer and 1,700 during peak herring runs in winter. They bark constantly, fight for rafts, and smell pungent — they're California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), not seals.

Where to Eat (Actually)
Fisherman's Wharf has a deserved reputation for overpriced mediocre food. But three dishes are world-class here and done in specific places only:

The sidewalk crab stands on Taylor Street are legitimate — they've operated since the 1920s. Whole Dungeness crab is cracked and served cold with bread and lemon. Only order during crab season (November-June).
Walk one block inland to Jefferson Street or Columbus Avenue for better value chain-free options. Sotto Mare in North Beach (5 minutes walk) is the locals' choice for cioppino at half the wharf price.
Ghirardelli Square
The red-brick Ghirardelli complex dates to 1893 and was the original Ghirardelli chocolate factory until 1963. It was the first large-scale adaptive reuse of a US industrial complex into a retail space — the model for Faneuil Hall and dozens of similar conversions.

Ghirardelli is a 10-minute walk west of Pier 39, uphill at the edge of Russian Hill. Combine with a ride down the Powell-Hyde cable car which terminates next to Aquatic Park below the Square.
Musée Mécanique
Musée Mécanique on Pier 45 is a free, working museum of over 300 coin-operated antique mechanical games — fortune tellers, arm wrestling machines, 1920s peep shows, a full-size Laffing Sal. It's one of the best hidden attractions in San Francisco and almost nobody tourists plan for it.
- Free entry — pay only per-machine ($0.25 to $1.00)
- Open 10am-8pm daily
- Bring quarters or use the change machine
- Best pieces: Laffing Sal, Susie the Can-Can Dancer, 1926 Mutoscopes
- Allow 45 minutes — you will lose track of time
Also on Pier 45: the USS Pampanito submarine and SS Jeremiah O'Brien Liberty Ship, both $20 to tour. Worth it if you have WWII interest.
Cable Car Turnaround
Two of San Francisco's three cable car lines end at Fisherman's Wharf — the Powell-Hyde at Hyde/Beach (right at Ghirardelli Square / Aquatic Park) and the Powell-Mason at Taylor/Bay (near Pier 39).
- Single ride: $8
- Day pass: $24 (includes all MUNI)
- Powell-Hyde: better views (Lombard St, Russian Hill, Alcatraz)
- Powell-Mason: shorter queue, rougher ride
- Best time: 9-10am or after 7pm to avoid 60-min queues
At the end of each line the car is rotated by hand on a wooden turntable — one of only three left in the world. Watching the turnaround is free and genuinely cool. Tipping the operator $1-2 is standard if you ride.
Avoiding Tourist Traps
Fisherman's Wharf has genuine highlights and genuine traps. Use this filter:
- Skip: Bubba Gump, Rainforest Cafe, Hard Rock, every chain at Pier 39
- Skip: Pier 39 Aquarium of the Bay ($30) — Monterey Bay Aquarium is 90 min away and 10x better
- Skip: Ripley's Believe It or Not, Madame Tussauds
- Worth it: Musée Mécanique, sea lions, cable car, Hyde St Pier ships
- Worth it: Boudin bakery tour upstairs (free), sidewalk crab stands
- Eat in North Beach instead: Sotto Mare, Tony's Pizza Napoletana, Molinari Delicatessen
Budget 3-4 hours for the wharf. Start at Pier 39 sea lions, walk west to Pier 45 (Musée Mécanique), continue to Ghirardelli, finish with Irish coffee at Buena Vista and cable car back.
