Where to Stay in Las Vegas

Vegas is not a walking city in the traditional sense — the Strip is four miles long and the walks between casinos are deceptively huge (Excalibur to Wynn is 50+ minutes on foot). Pick your base carefully.

The Strip

Vibe: 4.2 miles of megaresorts, choreographed fountains, pirate ships and Eiffel Towers. The most concentrated tourist stretch on earth. Crowded, loud, and exactly what Vegas means to most people.

Best for: First-time visitors, bachelor/bachelorette groups, luxury seekers, anyone who wants to walk from a Cirque show to a celebrity-chef dinner to a rooftop pool without leaving their hotel.

Hotels: Bellagio, Wynn, Cosmopolitan, Caesars Palace at the top ($380-650). Paris, Park MGM, NY-NY mid-tier ($220-380). Flamingo, LINQ budget ($140-220). Add $45-55 resort fee.

  • Fountains of Bellagio (free, every 15-30 min after 3pm)
  • See a Cirque du Soleil show — O, Mystère or KA
  • Eat: Bazaar Meat, Joël Robuchon, Momofuku, Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen
  • From LAS airport: 15-25 min Uber ($20-35) or the WAX self-driving shuttle

Downtown (Fremont)

Vibe: Old Vegas. The Fremont Street Experience canopy, cheap craps tables, neon museums, live bands. Grittier, denser, and much cheaper than the Strip. A five-block walk covers everything.

Best for: Repeat Vegas visitors, budget travelers, gamblers who want lower minimums, anyone who prefers old-school atmosphere over megaresort polish.

Hotels: Golden Nugget (best downtown pool), Circa (adults only, newest), Plaza, The D, Downtown Grand, El Cortez (cheapest). $100-200/night.

  • Fremont Street Experience — free concerts, zipline, 12.5 million LED canopy show
  • Neon Museum (book the night tour) — restored vintage Vegas signs
  • Eat: Carson Kitchen, Esther's Kitchen (Arts District, 10-min Uber)
  • From LAS airport: 20-25 min Uber ($25-35)

Summerlin

Vibe: Master-planned community on the western edge, 20 min from the Strip. Manicured golf courses, Red Rock Canyon right there, families and retirees.

Best for: Golfers, hikers doing Red Rock, families wanting space and calm, travelers with rental cars and no interest in partying.

Hotels: Red Rock Casino Resort (excellent pool), JW Marriott Las Vegas, Rampart Casino. $180-300/night.

  • Red Rock Canyon scenic drive + easy hikes (go early for the light)
  • TPC Summerlin and the Bear's Best golf courses
  • Downtown Summerlin mall and Red Rock Casino pool
  • From LAS airport: 30-35 min drive or Uber ($40-55)

Henderson

Vibe: The quieter southeastern suburb. Lake Las Vegas on the far edge, the M Resort on the Strip-facing side. Residential with a few destination casinos.

Best for: Travelers on longer stays, families, people adding Hoover Dam or Lake Mead, golfers seeking quieter courses.

Hotels: Green Valley Ranch, M Resort, Westin Lake Las Vegas, Hilton Lake Las Vegas. $160-260/night.

  • Lake Las Vegas paddleboarding and the Mediterranean-style village
  • Hoover Dam tour (30 min away) + Lake Mead viewpoint
  • Ethel M Chocolate Factory (free tour and cactus garden)
  • From LAS airport: 20 min drive to Green Valley, 40 min to Lake Las Vegas

Paradise

Vibe: Technically Paradise contains the Strip itself, but in practice locals use "Paradise" for off-Strip casinos immediately east: Westgate, Palace Station, Ellis Island, Virgin Hotels.

Best for: Value hunters, locals' casino fans (better odds, cheaper food), travelers comfortable with short Ubers to the Strip.

Hotels: Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, Westgate Resort, Palace Station, Tuscany Suites. $140-240/night with cheaper (often free) resort fees.

  • Ellis Island karaoke and $10 steak special (Vegas cult favorite)
  • Monorail from Westgate to the Strip in 3 minutes
  • Allegiant Stadium Raiders/NFL games
  • From LAS airport: 10 min Uber ($12-18)

Arts District

Vibe: 18b Arts District just south of Downtown. Vegas' answer to Wynwood — murals, craft breweries, vintage stores, independent restaurants. Walkable by Vegas standards.

Best for: Foodies, design-minded travelers, under-40s who want a Vegas trip that isn't about gambling.

Hotels: The ENGLiSH Hotel (Todd English's boutique), Oasis at Gold Spike (nearby). $160-260/night — inventory is limited, Airbnb common here.

  • Eat: Esther's Kitchen, Main St Provisions, Good Pie, Able Baker Brewing
  • First Friday street festival (first Friday of each month)
  • Vintage shopping at The Funk House, Retro Vegas
  • From LAS airport: 15 min Uber ($18-25)
⚠️ Resort fee warning: Nearly every Vegas hotel adds a $45-55 daily resort fee on top of the room rate. This covers WiFi and pool access whether you use them or not. Always check the total before booking.
💧 Walking tip: The Strip is deceptively large. From Mandalay Bay to Sahara is 4.2 miles. Use the monorail ($5/ride, $15/day) or taxi between resorts rather than walking in summer heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest neighborhood in Las Vegas?

Summerlin and Henderson are the safest — residential, low crime, away from the Strip. Downtown's Fremont East and the Arts District are also fine; tourist Strip resorts have heavy security.

Best neighborhood for first-time visitors in Las Vegas?

Mid-Strip — anywhere between Bellagio and The Venetian puts you in the middle of the action. Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, Paris and Caesars are the classic picks.

Cheapest area to stay in Vegas?

Downtown (Fremont Street) is dramatically cheaper than the Strip — often 40-60% less for similar room quality. Off-strip casinos like Palace Station and Gold Coast also offer value.

Strip vs Downtown — which is better?

Strip for first-timers, big pools, celebrity chefs and Cirque shows. Downtown for cheaper tables, stronger cocktail bars, actual neighborhood atmosphere and a tenth of the walking distance.

How much do Las Vegas hotels cost in 2026?

Strip 4-star $220-380 midweek, $350-600 weekends. Downtown $100-200 midweek. Add a $45-55 resort fee per night (the real cost of Vegas hotels).

Do I need a car in Las Vegas?

Not for a Strip-only trip. You need one for Summerlin, Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam or day trips. The Strip monorail, deuce bus and Ubers cover most visitors.

Which Strip hotels are the best value in 2026?

Park MGM, Paris and New York-New York tend to be the best mid-tier value. Flamingo and LINQ for budget. Resorts World is newest and often competitively priced.
